196 Years of Service

Faculty in Action

As we approach the end of the school year, we gratefully recognize a group of our faculty and staff who have had an incredible impact on Bryn Mawr. Collectively, they have served Bryn Mawr for a total of 196 years, and will retire at the end of this school year  but they will always remain a part of the fabric of our community. It is with deep appreciation that we recognize and applaud their dedication to Bryn Mawr.

Charlotte Armstead, Middle School Art

Charlotte Armstead is retiring after 33 years. Since 1984, she has been a fixture in the Middle School, developing the Middle School art curriculum, overseeing the division's “Black Awareness Club” for more than two decades, and spearheading important community programs such as Empty Bowls, SummerTech camp and the eighth grade thematic mosaic ceramic tile series. Armstead also co-founded the Middle School Traveling Art Show and Middle School Fine Arts Festival, both celebrated for over 20 years at the six Roland Park independent schools.
Charlotte's energy and creativity are boundless. Each year, she has impressed both her students and our community with new ways for students to express themselves. Throughout her years at Bryn Mawr, Charlotte was constantly looking for ways to highlight her students' work and to encourage each student to believe in her inner artist.

Diana Curran, Middle & Upper School Dance

Diana Curran is retiring after 22 years at Bryn Mawr. In addition to teaching dance to legions of Bryn Mawr students, she has shared her love of field hockey by coaching at all levels. Curran has been the chief architect of Gym Drill during her tenure and has helped the beloved tradition evolve over the last two decades. She has been passionately focused on bringing in new ethnic and cultural dances, particularly those that have been recommended by Bryn Mawr families, in order to better reflect the world and the Bryn Mawr student community.
From start to finish in her years at Bryn Mawr, Diana's energy has been endless. She teaches with incredible passion, energy, spirit and fun! She has always been committed to making sure the dances at Gym Drill reflected our community. Before the themes of interdisciplinary work and diversity became a part of our common language, Diana led the charge through dance. She is a lifelong learner and a true inspiration.
- Jeanette Budzik, Upper School Dean of Students

Bob Fenloch, Director of Operations

Bob Fenloch is retiring after 32 years at Bryn Mawr. During most of this time, Fenloch has been at the helm of the Operations Department, and the entire community has benefitted from his hard work, infinite patience and good humor. Fenloch has also served as a member of the Buildings & Grounds Committee, led the Bryn Mawr security team and shared his mandolin talents as a member of the faculty/staff band, Edith Jamilton.
All young people should have the opportunity to work for someone like Bob Fenloch. He sets the bar high for doing your job to the best of your ability each and every day with a positive attitude and unlimited patience. I am forever grateful to have had the pleasure of working with Bob for over 24 years.
- Sharon Wolford, Assistant Head of School for Finance and Administration

Kathy Halle, Little School

Kathy Halle is retiring after 24 years at Bryn Mawr. Halle is an exceptional teacher of Bryn Mawr's two-year-old Mawrtians. Her natural patience and gentle personality enable each child to shine as an individual as she supports their efforts in gaining new skills. The creative ways in which she engages with her students inspire exploration, thinking and mastery of appropriate skills.
Kathy Halle is one of the most creative, engaging and playful preschool teachers I have known. She easily formed loving and supportive relationships with all of her young students and provided them with a sensory-rich environment. Kathy often enjoyed long walks or buggy rides with her students. Together, the group would slowly stroll through the campus, stopping frequently to visit friends or to make interesting observations. Kathy was always providing new experiences to boost her students’ natural sense of wonder and curiosity.
- Megan Brown, Little School Director

Pat Nothstein, Lower School Director

Pat Nothstein is retiring after 33 years at Bryn Mawr. Over the course of those years, she served as a first grade teacher and the director of admissions before being named Lower School director in 2008. She has led her division with a passion for instilling a love of learning and independent thinking among Bryn Mawr's youngest girls. Under her leadership, the Lower School underwent a complete renovation in 2009-2010. Nothstein also helped to usher in the 1:1 iPad program, the Lower School’s first “maker space,” the recent playground installation, and of course, the new Lower School uniforms.
Pat Nothstein leads the Lower School with warmth, kindness and respect. Her ongoing support and encouragement of the faculty makes this an energetic, positive place to teach. And the students love her - what higher compliment is there?
- Anne Eggleston Broadus '88, Lower School Assistant Director

Linda Walcutt, Middle School Administrative Assistant

Linda Walcutt is retiring after 34 years at Bryn Mawr. She started in the Business Office in 1983, then moved to Admissions before joining the Middle School in 2007. She is known for her warmth and patience, and is accommodating of students and families. A true professional, Walcutt always looks for ways that she can help colleagues and the division run more smoothly. Her knowledge of how things work behind the scenes at Bryn Mawr is extraordinary.
Linda is a consummate professional. There was never any stone left unturned, any 't' that was failed to be crossed, and no student, parent, or faculty member that did not feel her support. In addition to all of the balls she kept in the air each day, she always had time to find a tearful sixth grader's math binder. She made it all look easy, but there was a tremendous amount of skill and patience that went into each and every day.
- Amanda Macomber, Middle School Director

Bill Waters, Upper School English

Bill Waters will retire after 17 years at Bryn Mawr, and more than 40 in education. In addition to being closely involved with each senior’s convocation speech, Waters has taught a number of English courses, including his popular Creative Writing and Recreating Nature classes. Waters has also served as a member of Bryn Mawr's college counseling team. He is known for his patience, thoughtfulness and love of the natural world.
Bill will be leaving the English Department, but his legacy will continue to shape what we do; his thoughtful contemplations and his joyous engagement with each text, each student, each colleague – these are the best parts of our community, and he embodies them as easily as he breathes. Bill has commented that 'this is hopeful business we're in.' Wise words, indeed, and we'll strive to carry on that tradition.
