Middle School Tower of Power Competition

Each year, sixth, seventh and eighth grade students participate in the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Tower of Power challenge. Middle School students are challenged to build the tallest free-standing tower they can using only dry spaghetti and marshmallows in 30 minutes. Students always enjoy themselves, and this year, a team of Bryn Mawr students qualified to compete in the Tower of Power Competition at JHU . Our team of Carolyn, Hallie, and Abby represented Bryn Mawr well, and although they did not place, they built well! They also ran into alumna Anum Haque '17 at the event. She participated in the Tower of Power when she was in Middle School and is now helping to run the event.

January/February 2019: In the Classroom

The start of a new year means there is always something exciting going on in Bryn Mawr’s classrooms. In January, Bryn Mawr Upper School English students welcomed students from Baltimore Leadership School for Young Women (BLSYW) as part of the Baltimore class. The class is a collaboration between BLSYW and Bryn Mawr where students read the same material in English class and meet several times a semester to hear guest speakers and have discussions. French 5 students had the unique opportunity to discuss art and feminism with the Mauritanian artist Amy Sow. Students discussed their projects with her and were able to practice their skills using only French during the conversation. Over in Middle School, students finished a week of work on their Vision and Voice projects by hearing from parents and alumnae who work in fields they are interested in.
