Alia Zerhouni '27 Honored by Center Stage in Young Playwrights Festival

Congratulations are in order for Bryn Mawr second grader Alia Zerhouni, who was selected as one of the 2017 Center Stage Young Playwrights Festival honorees. Alia's play, entitled "The Little Kiwi," was one of only six plays – out of 600 entries – that was selected to be professional staged and performed at Center Stage. From the play description: "It’s never easy to move to a new place, especially if you’re a Little Kiwi. With grouchy neighbors and funny new smells, nothing feels like home. But with a little courage, and a lot of love, Little Kiwi might just find a way to fit in."

For more than 31 years, the Young Playwrights Festival (YPF) has been Center Stage's flagship education program. The program exposes children across Maryland to professional teaching artists and helps students learn the craft of play writing, including communicating their ideas, developing characters, writing dialogue and creating a narrative arc for their stories. Every playwright who submits to the YPF receives constructive feedback, and a handful are chosen either to be professional staged at Center Stage or to receive an in-school reading. Honorees like Alia also have the opportunity to work with a mentor to help them refine and edit their scripts.

Sue Sadler, Bryn Mawr's Next Head of School, Wins NCGS Award

Last month, Sue Sadler, Bryn Mawr's next head of school, was named the inaugural winner of the H. William Christ Educator Prize. Given by the National Coalition of Girls Schools, the prize is awarded in honor of Bill Christ, former NCGS trustee and long-time visionary head of Hathaway Brown School, and was established to recognize an educator who has demonstrated a commitment to extraordinary teaching, program design and/or curricular innovation in a member school. Sadler is currently the senior associate head of school and director of the Upper School at Hathaway Brown.

In the official announcement, NCGS noted, "Sue Sadler, who for 30 years has been at the forefront of Hathaway Brown's successful efforts to cultivate a culture that embraces both excellence and innovation with a loving sense of community, is the embodiment of this award. Recipients of the Christ Educator Prize reflect creative excellence, cutting edge programming, entrepreneurial teaching, and collaborative design in their teaching, which characterized Bill's own leadership style as the quintessential 'educator's educator.'"
