Bryn Mawr to Honor Rebecca Corbett P’05 with Inaugural Howard P. Colhoun Family Woman of Consequence Award

The Howard P. Colhoun Family Woman of Consequence Award, named in honor of a loyal Bryn Mawr volunteer leader, inspires the next generation of changemakers by celebrating and supporting women who have used their voices and actions to make positive contributions to the building of a more equitable and just world.

“Leadership not only comes from experience, but seeing others do it well,” said Howard “Pete” Colhoun P’82 ‘84 ‘92, Bryn Mawr trustee emeritus. “My family and I are pleased to support this important initiative at Bryn Mawr to provide students with inspiration and role models of leadership. Showing young girls what other women have accomplished in life puts it in their realm of possibility and reach.”

 

Ms. Corbett joined The New York Times as enterprise editor at the Washington bureau in 2004 and later served as a masthead editor, senior enterprise editor and deputy Washington bureau chief. She has edited multiple Pulitzer Prize-winning stories at The New York Times and earlier in her career. Ms. Corbett’s previous positions include multiple roles at The Baltimore Sun, including assistant managing editor, and editor at The Journal Inquirer in Manchester, Connecticut. She began her career at The Central Maine Morning Sentinel in Waterville, Maine.

Ms. Corbett graduated from Colby College in Waterville, Maine. She has done journalism fellowships at Stanford University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University and the University of Pennsylvania.

“It is a huge honor to me to receive the inaugural Woman of Consequence award from Bryn Mawr,” Corbett said. “Working in a newsroom is a collaborative undertaking. As an editor, my job is to help reporters do their very best work, which entails a number of leadership skills and qualities. I look forward to sharing more about my career trajectory, the work I’ve been involved with and the impact we’ve had in the world.”

The Howard P. Colhoun Family Woman of Consequence Award event will be held on Thursday, April 29, 2021 at 6 p.m. Following the award presentation, Politico reporter Katy O’Donnell `05 will moderate a conversation and audience Q&A. The event will be held at The Bryn Mawr School and available virtually.  

Ms. Corbett’s visit to campus and award presentation is the culminating event in Bryn Mawr’s Leadership in Action programming series for students and alumnae over the academic year, along with the Student Expo. Launched in 2020, Leadership in Action is a distinctive character, curiosity and community-building program for all pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade students that brings together personalized leadership development for each student, community engagement experiences and social impact opportunities.
