Bryn Mawr hosted The Samuel Ready Scholarship Awards, celebrating the graduating seniors from Bryn Mawr, Friends School of Baltimore, Roland Park Country School, Garrison Forest and Saint Paul’s School for Girls and recognizing students for their hard work and accomplishments.
As the featured speaker at this year’s event, Bryn Mawr alumna April Walker ‘07 spoke about the opportunities that the Samuel Ready Scholarship offers its students and encouraged current scholars to embrace every opportunity that comes their way. “I thrived, honing innate skills and abilities in and out of the classroom, developing
leadership skills, trying out for plays, playing sports I did not know existed, attending diversity conferences, practicing public speaking skills, taking photography and developing photos in a dark room, learning Latin, Spanish, and Mandarin,” she shared.
April also said that as a student she was unaware of the scholarship, or who Samuel Ready was, but “because my mother and father, and by extension Samuel Ready, knew something back then that I did not, which is that investing in academically promising young girls, regardless of their family’s ability to cover the full cost of tuition, is something that will pay dividends beyond measure.”
For 45 years, Bryn Mawr has partnered with Samuel Ready Scholarships, allowing the school to identify and support dozens of amazing students. Senior Director of Enrollment Management Rebekah Jackson said, “Without these scholarships, far fewer girls in Baltimore would be able to benefit from an independent school education. And without these scholars, our schools would not have the diverse perspectives and significant contributions to our communities.”
Samuel Ready scholar Carmen Lennon ’25 was one of six students to be recognized at the event. She received the Mabel C. Hunter Award for Exceptional Service to the Community. Bryn Mawr and Samuel Ready Scholarships board member Kiana Hebron ‘95 presented Carmen her award at the ceremony.
