Community Service Learning
Community Service Learning 2024-2025
Bryn Mawr believes that learning takes place both inside and outside the classroom. The School also believes that students should be committed to and involved in the greater community. Community service learning takes place through involvement in and service to the community; it is integrated into all levels of the school and is a requirement for graduation.
Students may fulfill the service learning requirement through direct or indirect service with a non-profit organization whose purpose is to better its community, and where volunteers perform a service. Service projects should provide meaningful service, offer unique learning experiences, and have real consequences.
The School believes that active engagement and consistent commitment to an organization and/or service experience allow students to build connections and strengthen their awareness of an organization’s mission, values, and the clients it serves. Bryn Mawr also believes that reflection is an important part of the service process as it deepens a student’s understanding of their work, and the world in which we live.
It is the hope that students will build upon their service work throughout Upper School to make a greater impact on their community and beyond. Through direct continued service work with an organization, and through opportunities provided through Bryn Mawr such as independent projects, capstones, and the Broadus award, students can effect change.
