School Uniforms - NEW for Fall 2020

Upper School Uniforms

NEW FOR FALL 2020
Beginning in September 2020 through at least the first semester, Upper School students are not required to wear their uniforms to school. Students are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing that is appropriate for after-school activities and sports to limit the need for students to change in small spaces like locker rooms. Of course, students are welcome to wear the uniform if they prefer to do so.

We ask that students adhere to guidelines about attire for days out of uniform. As described in the Upper School Handbook, clothing worn must be appropriate for a school setting and shoes are required. Clothing that is inappropriate to wear to school includes: strapless, low-cut, or camisole tops with straps less than 2" wide; see-through apparel; bare midriffs; clothing with excessive cutouts, rips, or holes; excessively short skirts or shorts; and pajamas.

Dean of Students Emily Fetting will keep students and families apprised of when students should resume wearing school uniforms and will give plenty of notice for this transition. A return to uniforms between January and March 2021 would mean students would wear the hunter green winter uniform; after spring break, students would wear the light green fall/spring uniform.

In preparation for a return to uniform later in the year, please find below Bryn Mawr's uniform guidelines as described in the Upper School Handbook. As always, questions about the uniform can be directed to Emily Fetting.

General Handbook Policy
In order to reduce both cost and competition, Bryn Mawr has a uniform that is worn by all students until the spring of their senior year. Bryn Mawr’s guidelines about appearance are based on the belief that students should arrive on campus dressed neatly and appropriately for a school setting. The uniform includes various options and combinations because, for students of this age, some degree of individuality is desirable.

Students are expected to wear clean, neat, well-fitting uniforms and to own all parts of the uniform. No team uniforms are to be worn on Founders Day, Thanksgiving convocation, Class Day, and other special occasions, such as the Cum Laude Convocation and the Department Awards Assembly.

Students are expected to wear clean, neat, well-fitting uniforms and to own all parts of the uniform. No team uniforms are to be worn on Founders Day, Thanksgiving convocation, Class Day, and other special occasions, such as the Cum Laude Convocation and the Departmental Awards Assembly. Clothing worn underneath the uniform must not be visible (e.g., no colored t-shirts under polos, no boxer shorts or spandex extending below uniform skirt, etc.). Skirts may be no shorter than mid-thigh.

Students begin the academic year in the fall/spring uniform and transition to the winter uniform after Thanksgiving Break. Students wear the fall/spring uniform after Spring Break.
