5/13 Webinar with Dr. Khyati Joshi

In celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, Bryn Mawr is hosting a webinar with Dr. Khyati Joshi exploring immigration history in the United States and the ways in which that history connects to the modern-day Asian Pacific American community.
Parents, faculty, staff and Middle and Upper School students are invited to join the webinar on Wednesday, May 13, at 4:30 p.m.

Dr. Joshi is a scholar and thought leader on the intersecting issues of race, religion and immigration in the United States. Her writings, speeches, and course work focus on promoting cultural and religious pluralism in the United States.

"This month let us recognize the historical and ongoing contributions and experiences of the Asian Pacific American community. Let us be led by learning to ask the difficult questions and apply a critical lens to explore the ways in which our present has been informed by our history," said Talia Busby Titus, Director of Global Programs & Diversity.

In 1978 President Jimmy Carter signed a resolution recognizing “Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week” and congress in 1992 passed a law designating a full month to celebrate the achievements and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. The month of May was chosen in order to commemorate the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7, 1843, as well as the anniversary of the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869 by workers who were largely Chinese immigrants.
