Lower School Teacher Mimi Walters Selected to Join the Virginia Tech Distinguished Alumni Board

Lower School Physical Education Teacher Mimi Walters was invited by her alma mater Virginia Tech to sit on the Distinguished Alumni Board.

Walters will represent the Department of English, where she completed her masters degree and a minor during her undergraduate studies. She says being selected for the board means the world to her. “It means so much because English is something I am passionate about,” said Walters. “ I majored in English not because I was trying to figure out what I was doing with my life, but because I truly loved it. It taught me how to think critically, write well and appreciate literature,” Walters said.

The board selects professionals from it’s pool of alumni in a wide variety of fields, including education, medicine, law, broadcasting, information systems, real estate, and development, to support current students through career panels, networking opportunities, and seminars. Walters says she hopes to be able to give students who are struggling with the decision to major in English hope.

“Often times, students are concerned about not getting jobs with a humanities degree, but I want to reassure them that English is a great field to go into, and share my story so they can see why there doesn’t have to be a direct connection to a job in order for a field of study to be valuable,” Walters said. “Even though I’m not currently doing something that is directly related to English, I still use it every day. It feels great to be able to give back a little bit in this way and share what was a profound experience for me with them.”
