Giroux Sisters Head to National History Day Nationals
Sisters Abigail ‘25 and Katherine ‘22 Giroux are heading to the national competition of the National History Day contest for their original documentary films.
National History Day is a national competition in which students around the country select topics and create projects that they connect to the same national theme. This year's theme is Triumph and Tragedy in History. Students can create projects in one of the following categories: paper, documentary, website, performance, and exhibit.
At the state competition, sixth grader Abigail was honored as the second place finisher in the junior division’s individual documentary category for her film, Indispensable: The U. S. Signal Corps Female Telephone Operators Unit at War.
Ninth grader Katherine was awarded first place in the senior individual documentary category for her film, Death Disease & Discrimination: The Building of the Panama Canal. “I started participating in NHD in seventh grade as a requirement, and found it to be really fun,” Katherine said. “Plus, the process really improved my research, writing, and interview skills.”
The sisters are among approximately 3,000 students from around the world who will advance to the National Contest, which will take place June 9-12 at the University of Maryland at College Park.
