Librarian of Congress Dr. Carla Hayden to Address The Bryn Mawr School’s Graduating Class of 2018

Dr. Carla Hayden, the first woman and first African American to serve as Librarian of Congress, will address the Class of 2018 at The Bryn Mawr School’s commencement ceremony on Tuesday, June 12, 2018.

Carla Hayden, Ph.D., is the 14th Librarian of Congress, and she is the first professional librarian appointed to the post in more than 60 years. Previously, she led the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore for more than 20 years.

Hayden's three decades of library experience have included positions with the Chicago Public Library, Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry, University of Pittsburgh, and the Enoch Pratt Library in Baltimore. She was nominated to be Librarian of Congress by President Barack Obama on February 24, 2016, and her nomination was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on July 13, 2016.

Hayden was president of the American Library Association from 2003 to 2004. In 1995, she was the first African American to receive Library Journal’s Librarian of the Year Award in recognition of her outreach services at the Pratt Library, which included an after-school center for Baltimore teens offering homework assistance and college and career counseling. Hayden received a B.A. from Roosevelt University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the Graduate Library School of the University of Chicago.

“It is an incredible privilege for the Bryn Mawr community to welcome Dr. Hayden for this special occasion,”said Sue Sadler, Head of School. “We inspired by Dr. Hayden’s dedication to scholarship and learning and by her leadership in the areas of education, access, and community-building here in Baltimore and beyond. She is a true role model for our graduates as they leave Bryn Mawr to become responsible and confident participants in the world.”

This June, Bryn Mawr will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its first African American graduate, Erselle Datcher Porter. “As we honor the occasion of this significant ‘first’ for our own community, it will be especially poignant for Dr. Hayden to share her personal reflections as a trailblazer in her field,” Sadler said.

Bryn Mawr’s commencement ceremony will be held on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at 10 a.m. on campus in the Graduation Garden. A livestream will be available at brynmawrschool.org/live.
