Student Center Groundbreaking
On Friday, January 25, members of the Bryn Mawr community gathered to mark the start of construction on the new Student Center with a groundbreaking ceremony.
The celebration, complete with music, poetry, and ceremonial dirt, symbolized a step toward the creation of a place that will have an a transformative effect on each person on campus and symbolizes Bryn Mawr’s commitment to a strong community and extraordinary student experience.
To celebrate this school milestone, Head of School Sue Sadler addressed students and reflected on what she hoped the Student Center will bring to Bryn Mawr, saying, “In many ways, this new space signals a new era for our school. We hope that it shows how much we care about your daily experience as a Bryn Mawr girl and how important the connections we form with one another are to us as a school.”
Students also shared what they are most looking forward to about the Student Center, listing new food options, opportunities to share fun memories, and a new space to show their spirit and shine wherever they are as a few of the things they are excited about.
During the joyous event, Bryn Mawr recognized and thanked the many members of the school community who supported the project through generous gifts, including the Fowlkes Family. Jennie Lee ‘65 and Hobie Fowlkes, along with their daughters Elizabeth Williams Edmunds ’89, Katherine Williams ’91 and Sarah Fowlkes Mumford ’96, together, made the largest gift to Bryn Mawr in its 134 year history — making it possible to move ahead with this project.
In honor of the Fowlkes family, their extraordinary generosity and love of Bryn Mawr’s school flower—the daisy—City of Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh issued a “Mayoral Salute,” declaring the last Friday of January as Daisy Day at Bryn Mawr. On this day forward, members of the school community will wear green, gold, white and daisies, “to share our pride and gratitude, be of service to the school, and inspire others to do the same.”
Construction of the Student Center will be complete in seven months. Next fall, it will the heart of campus where students can socialize, collaborate, relax and strengthen bonds with classmates and teammates.
