Welcome, New Faculty and Staff!

Bryn Mawr welcomed 19 new faces to the faculty and staff at the beginning of the school year: five in the Little School, one in the Lower School, six in the Middle School, two in the Upper School, two in the Technology Department, two school nurses and a new alumnae director.

Seniors Receive National Merit Recognition

Congratulations to our 11 seniors who have been recognized by the National Merit Program and the College Board as either Commended Scholars, National Merit Semifinalists or National Hispanic Scholars! Bryn Mawr is the only girls' school in the Baltimore area represented in the National Merit competition this year at the Semifinalist level.

Elizabeth Macksey and Katherine Nurminsky have been named National Merit Semifinalists, and will compete for two of the 7,400 National Merit Scholarships available. Seven other students — Christine Blackshaw, Rachel Bogin, Natasha Dada, Nyx Deane-Polyak, Claire Dunbar, Maddy Unger and Anna Wu — have been named Commended Scholars. Finally, Alex McComas and Sophia Yazigi have been named National Hispanic Scholars.

The National Merit Scholarship program is open to all high school students who complete the PSAT/NMSQT by the close of their junior year. More than 1,600,000 students take the test each year. This year, the top 50,000 — only 3.5 percent of all test-takers — qualified for National Merit acknowledgment. Sixty-eight percent of those students were subsequently named Commended Scholars, while the 16,000 highest-scoring students will go on to compete for scholarships as National Merit Semifinalists.

To achieve recognition as a National Hispanic Scholar, a student must be of Hispanic descent and score in the top 5,000 of the approximately 124,000 students taking the PSAT/NMSQT. Institued by the College Board in 1983, the goal of the National Hispanic Scholars program is to identify outstanding Hispanic high school students.

Lower School Director Pat Nothstein to Retire

It is with deep appreciation that we share that Lower School Director Pat Nothstein will retire following the 2016-17 academic year. A devoted and well-respected colleague, mentor and friend, Nothstein's warmth, kind heart and deep commitment to girls’ education will be dearly missed.

Nothstein came to Bryn Mawr in 1984 as a first grade teacher, a position she held for ten years. During this time, she developed and led for many years Bryn Mawr Reader’s Camp, a popular summer program that helped support and provide continuity in learning for elementary-age girls attending Baltimore City Public Schools. In 1994, she joined the Admissions Office as assistant director of admission and later served as the director of admission from 2001 until 2008, when she was named Lower School director.

As Lower School director, Nothstein has led her division with a passion for instilling a love of learning and independent thinking among the school’s youngest girls. Under her leadership, the Lower School underwent a complete renovation in 2009-10, resulting in beautiful classroom improvements to the Elementary Center and art and music spaces. She helped usher in the 1:1 iPad program, the Lower School’s first “maker space,” and the recent new playground installation.

As such a respected member of the Bryn Mawr community, Nothstein has been honored by her colleagues with the ’37-’45 Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1990 and the Broadus Award in 1999. She has made a profound impact on Bryn Mawr students, faculty and families in her 32 years of service to the school, and we are most grateful.

Bryn Mawr’s Director of Arts Honored for Mixed Media Artwork

Congratulations to Director of Arts Michael Robinson, whose fiber art/mixed media piece, “Guardian in the Garden of Delight,” was awarded one of the juror’s awards at the opening reception of the “UNITED in Passion and Pride” exhibition at the 39th Street Gallery in the Gateway Arts Center. This exhibition is in response to the mass shooting that took the lives of 49 people at the Pulse Night Club, a gay bar in Orlando Florida, in the early morning hours of June 12, 2016, and includes artists from across the nation.
