Each year, Bryn Mawr sponsors a range of global education programs that also include opportunities for service and language immersion. These experiences instill a deeper understanding of and appreciation for cultures and peoples around the world, as well as providing chances for our students to continue to experience a diversity of opinions, experiences and backgrounds, which is an important part of our commitment to building diversity. Most of all, global education provides an opportunity for students to get to know themselves and understand their place in this world in a way that can only be achieved by stepping outside of their comfort zones.

Last year, Bryn Mawr girls traveled to Peru, Spain, Canada, Cuba, England, the Czech Republic and South Africa. Below, hear directly from our students about the most memorable moments of their trips and what they will take with them from these experiences.

"After the trip I knew I wanted to involve myself in more exchanges and Spanish camps and programs, so that traveling and speaking Spanish can be a part of my career. I would also like to study abroad in Spain during college now."
-    Frannie Esposito '18 (Spain)

"The most memorable experience of my trip was being able to talk to a local fisherman on the Malecón about Cuban-American relations."
-    Maddy Unger '17 (Cuba)

"I've gained a better understanding of how little time we have to preserve our planet, and have begun taking steps to help."
-    Katherine Nurminsky '17 (Canada)

My Cuban experience was truly invaluable. We had so much fun, but still learned a lot of history and current topics every day. Traveling in a culture that is almost in another time due to the embargo was a really cool experience for me.
-    Helen Mackay '18 (Cuba)

"I learned a lot about being flexible and adapting myself to an environment that is outside my comfort zone. Through visiting a developing country, I also realized the immense amount of privilege I have."
-    Emily Zhang '18 (Cuba)

"I loved the little adventures that crept into my everyday life at Christ's Hospital. Being abroad meant there were endless amounts of new things around me, and this, combined with my curiosity, brought new joys to each and every day. I also cherish all of the friends I made and people I could connect with despite the thousands of miles between our home towns and the occasional different words (and English accent). The people I met amazed me with the diversity of their backgrounds and the richness of their thoughts. Living with 40+ girls my age also helped me bond with people I would not have talked to otherwise. Overall, the most memorable things about my experience were definitely the people I met and also the places I got to see."
-    Emilie Berman '17 (England)

"I definitely learned how to be more independent as this was the longest period of time I've ever been away from home. I not only learned lots about cultures and lifestyles but also how to better interact with people. Being out of my comfort zone by having to interact with strangers was very beneficial for me. As the trip went on I grew more confident in asking questions and sparking conversations with everyone, from the First Nations people we worked with to a man from Ohio sitting next to me on the plane!"
-    Leah Bartlett '19 (Canada)
"The atmosphere and the dynamic that developed between the Americans and our Czech partners made it so easy for me to speak up and engage in group conversations without being afraid. I never thought that I could leave the country for a month with people I didn’t really know all that well, but this experience has really boosted my confidence in my own abilities. I also grew more independent. On this trip, I really felt like my own person. I explored Prague in ways that I never would have been able to just on a vacation. It was such a wonderful experience to not only learn about a different part of the world but also to increase my understanding of myself."
-    Charlotte Skolasky '17 (Czech Republic)

"I've found that meeting new people is the gateway to incredible experiences. Every connection I made in England taught me something about how different our culture was, but also how similar the youth could be. There was an emotional aspect in which I grew by developing connections with people that I still talk to today. In addition, I grew a sense of independence that had not blossomed in me yet; taking care of myself in England and maintaining productivity has really prepared me for the real world after high school. In addition, I think the classes showed me a perspective on learning that I really enjoyed and valued, emphasizing the importance of academic growth."
-    Zarah Naqib '17 (England)

"I feel like I have gained a whole new perspective on Cuba and relations with the U.S. I also feel that I have become much more of a global citizen then before. I loved the trip and I really hope more Bryn Mawr girls get the chance to take part in it! It is one of my most treasured high school experiences."
-    Gabby Sitko '17 (Cuba)

"My Spanish skills greatly improved, as well as my comfort level with traveling internationally and speaking with locals. I had to learn to interact with people from different cultures besides our own, and understand social norms that are different from my own."
-    Jessica Cahn '18 (Cuba)

"This experience in Peru has led me to understand a different culture by being placed directly in the community. The culture shock was very real, and because of it, I grew so much. I have grown a better sense of what I would like to pursue in the future for a career and I have discovered a passion for helping others while gaining knowledge from a different culture. This experience has really affected me, in a good way. I came back to the States with a completely different perspective on my way of life and how different life is in Peru, specifically in the native community of Infierno. Because of the impact the community left on me, I really hope to pursue a career in public health, specifically traveling around the world, gaining perspectives, and helping communities in any way I can using my foreign language skills. I also made a promise to the people I became close to, my new friends, that I would return in two years. I want to go back and see if I can make a career possibly remaining in the community."
