Jane Strachan ’91 Speaks at Alumnae Convocation

On January 6, we were excited to welcome Jane Strachan ’91 back to speak about her experience working with USAID/OFDA. Jane graduated from Whitman College in 1995 and received a master’s degree from The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Hygiene and Public Health in 2003. She has been with the Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA), United States Agency for International Development (USAID) since 2006, serving in several capacities all over the world, including Darfur, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Jordan, Syria, and Iraq, just to name a few. The Upper School girls loved hearing about her experiences, and several joined her afterward for a lunch Q&A session.

Special thanks also to the many young alumnae who joined us for convocation and lunch, and then met with Headmistress Maureen Walsh for a continuation of the conversation about Bryn Mawr’s future: What Girls Need in the 21st Century. Your thoughts and ideas about these topics will help guide our thinking throughout Bryn Mawr’s strategic planning process!

STEM Mentors Needed

For the third year, we are seeking alumnae who have worked in STEM-related fields to serve as mentors/penpals for current Bryn Mawr Upper School girls. One of the most important factors in continued interest in STEM fields for girls results from having role models who have done what the students dream of doing. Maybe you majored in a STEM discipline, found your way to a STEM-related job, or have other noteworthy experience in STEM. If so, you would make an ideal STEM Alumnae Mentor!

The program consists of weekly emails with your student, and should take no more than an hour each week. We run this program from February to June. If you live in the Baltimore area or happen to visit, we will work with you to set-up additional meetings with your mentee.

In the past, we have had alumnae in the following fields participate:

Business                                   Nursing
Astrophysics   Psychology
Technology Environmental Sciences
Neuroscience      Computer Science
Public Health Engineering
Digital Media Medicine
Veterinary Medicine    Architecture
Molecular Biology Business Analytics
Marine Science Cyber Security
Human Genetics Sociology
Environmental Law Pharmacology
Immunology

However, there are so many other fields out there that are also applicable.

If you have any interest in participating, please fill out this brief survey.

Feedback from past student participants:

"I never thought that I could connect with an adult so easily, especially when discussing options for my future."

"It was so fun to find out how things have changed since my mentor has graduated, and learn about how things in her field have changed too!"

"I am SOOOO grateful for my mentor. She helped me think through college programs, and showed me that it is okay not to know exactly what I want to do."
