Director of Student Support Services/Upper School Counselor

The Director of Student Support Services/Upper School Counselor provides leadership and professional expertise in implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes community wellness and enhances student learning. The Director of Student Support Services will oversee and engage in a school-wide, team approach with colleagues, students and parents to guide student support and to foster wellness programs with a shared view of academic, cognitive, social and emotional perspectives. The Upper School Counselor responds to personal, social and emotional needs of students in grades 9 - 12, manages crisis situations, and establishes and implements educational and preventive services for students, parents, and faculty. This is a 10 month position.

The Director of Student Support Services/Upper School Counselor performs under the general direction of the Head of School and under the supervision of the Associate Head of School. He/she collaborates closely with the Upper School Director.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Serve as a trusted and confidential counselor and resource for students and families in the areas of social, emotional, and mental health issues
  • Consult and collaborate with the Division Directors, Middle and Lower School Counselors, Learning Support Staff, School Nurses, and other administrators and faculty to ensure appropriate communication about student needs and concerns, particularly as they transition between divisions
  • Provide crisis assessment and management for students in grades 9 – 12, and to the school community, as needed
  • Collaborate with and make referrals to appropriate community support providers/resources for students and families
  • Develop, facilitate, collaborate and enthusiastically communicate about educational programs for parents, faculty, staff and administration related to adolescent development, behavior management, and social, emotional, and mental well-being
  • Work with the school administrative team and divisional health professionals to advocate for, advise on, and to develop an exceptional girls’ and young women’s wellness program by translating research on wellness and health into a teaching and learning environment, especially as it relates to the intersection of social and emotional health on cognition.
  • Coordinate the existing wellness course programming and develop additional course programming to instruct students about stress reduction, sex education, gender identity, community norms, communication skills, and other current issues facing adolescents.
  • Oversee peer mentoring programming by training upper school students to teach younger students on topics such as friendship, communication, intolerance, inclusion/exclusion, risk taking, and getting help.
  • Schedule the annual visit of the nationally recognized Freedom from Chemical Dependency program to work with 9th grade students, faculty and parents teaching prevention of alcohol and other drugs. Work with FCD teachers to design lessons that meet Bryn Mawr’s needs and implement FCD suggestions throughout the school year.
  • Maintain counseling records in accordance with professional standards
  • Engage in professional-growth activities through continuing education and reviewing current research and literature
Additional Requirements
  • Master’s degree in a related field
  • Licensure/certification in counseling (e.g., Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LSW), School Counselor with Secondary Certification, or other applicable certification)
  • 3-5 years of experience working with a diversity of adolescents and teenagers
  • Strong knowledge of student mental health issues and adolescent development
  • Experience in managing a wide variety of difficult and confidential situations
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to lead a team of health professionals toward a shared vision of wellness programming.
  • Ability to work effectively in group and one-on-one settings
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and facilitating programs and collaborating with students, parents, colleagues, and external resources.
