Bryn Mawr Announces Appointment of New Upper School Director

The Bryn Mawr School is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Nicole Gilpin Hood to the position of Upper School Director beginning July 1, 2018. She will succeed Jeanette Budzik, who is serving as Interim Upper School Director for the 2017-18 academic year.

Dr. Hood currently serves as the director of All-School Programs & Partnerships at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools, a private, coeducational day school affiliated with the University of Chicago. In this role, she oversees faculty professional development, all-school curriculum coordination and school diversity, equity and inclusion. Previously, Dr. Hood spent eight years at St. Catherine’s School, a JK-12 Episcopal girls school in Richmond, VA, where she served as an English and history teacher, English department chair, and the director of X-term, an Upper School academic enrichment program. She has also taught at Georgia State University, Howard University and Spelman College.

A graduate of National Cathedral School in Washington D.C., Dr. Hood holds a B.A. in city planning from the University of Virginia, an M.A. and PhD in the history of art from the University of Michigan, and a graduate certificate in educational leadership and policy studies from the University of Richmond.

“In a field of incredibly talented candidates from our international search, Dr. Hood was a clear fit for Bryn Mawr with her excitement for and commitment to Bryn Mawr’s strategic plan initiatives such as Personalized Pathways, experiential learning, and balancing academic excellence with student well-being. She also has valuable experience in a coordinated school environment and with diversity, equity and inclusion programming,” said Sue Sadler, Head of School. “We are eager to welcome Dr. Hood and her family to Bryn Mawr.”

“I am thrilled to join the Bryn Mawr community. At every stage of the search process and from the moment I stepped on campus, I felt welcomed and was impressed with the dedication and commitment of everyone I met at school  faculty, staff, parents, and especially students,” said Dr. Hood. “I’m looking forward to spending every day with students and families  getting to know them, supporting the girls' growth and development, and preparing them for the world beyond Bryn Mawr.”

Bryn Mawr’s Upper School Director Search Committee, made up of parents, faculty, alumnae and administrators, worked with the firm Carney Sandoe & Associates on the search, which attracted a talented pool of international candidates.
