Welcome 2022 Clayborne Fellows

The Bryn Mawr School is pleased to announce the 2022-2023 fellows for the Dorothy Clayborne Fellowship for Aspiring Teachers of Color.

The Clayborne Fellowship for Aspiring Teachers of Color program arose from the first tenant of Bryn Mawr’s DEI Action Plan: “To actively seek to ensure that both our student and adult communities reflect the diversity of the world around us.” Named for Dorothy Clayborne, a beloved educator for 60+ years who was the first teacher of color in Bryn Mawr’s Lower School, the goal of the fellowship is to hire, support, and retain aspiring teachers of color, not only at Bryn Mawr, but in the greater independent school community.

Fellows serve as active faculty members, teaching a reduced course load or co-teaching alongside their mentor. Additionally, they are involved in arts, athletics, clubs, diversity, equity and inclusion programming and/or service learning, while also fostering their individual interests both inside and outside the classroom.

Meet the 2022-2023 Clayborne Teaching Fellows:

Allen Branch graduated from Johns Hopkins Peabody Conservatory with a Bachelor of Music in jazz performance this past spring. Allen joined the Bryn Mawr Teaching Assistant team during the pandemic, working in both the Middle and Upper Schools. Passionate about music, Allen recalls the dedicated teachers that inspired him and hopes to similarly help underrepresented students.  Allen’s goal is to become an instrumental music teacher.  He spent part of this summer teaching music as a part of Middle Grades Partnership at Bryn Mawr. Allen will be working in the Middle School arts department as a fellow this year.

Ashley Johnson studied English at Towson University, serving as a research assistant under Dr. Sherita Roundtree studying noise, pedagogy, and composition. She is an graduate student at Johns Hopkins University, working towards her Masters in Liberal Arts. Ashley’s research and professional interests lie at the intersections of interdisciplinary creative practice, Black feminism, embodiment and community liberation and transformation. She will be teaching Middle School English.
