Susan Orlando, Lower School Second Grade

"A Bryn Mawr education really encompasses the whole child—mind, body, spirit—and all of these aspects are addressed each day. I think that is really special, because not every school does that."

What do you like the most about teaching at Bryn Mawr?

At Bryn Mawr there is such camaraderie amongst the teachers, and the children are wonderful. It is a very pleasant place to work. I love spending my days with the children and it is such a privilege to be able to come to work every day and do that. An added bonus is the faculty, who are all so dedicated. We support each other and we truly care for each other. I think of them as my extended family.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I think that children learn best in a nurturing environment where they feel safe, are comfortable enough to share their ideas, take risks, and ask questions, and  where they learn to respect themselves, each other, and their teachers. When those elements are in place, real learning can happen.

What do you think is the most valuable thing about a Bryn Mawr education?

It really encompasses the whole child—mind, body, spirit—and all of these aspects are addressed each day. I think that is really special, because not every school does that.
