Position Summary
The Modern Language program in the Middle School is designed to provide a hands-on and engaging learning experience for all students. An authentic, communication-based curriculum prepares students for meaningful expression in the target language through reading, writing, speaking and listening. Through world language study, students develop sensitivity to the cultural and linguistic heritage of others and prepare to participate in a society characterized by linguistic and cultural diversity. The position will focus on the Levels IB and II. Candidates should have interest in teaching highly motivated girls in a school that values not only intellectual pursuits but also building strong relationships and community.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach four sections of Spanish, Classes typically are between 15-18 students.
- Lead an advisory of 8-10 students.
- Serve on departmental, grade level, and divisional faculty teams.
- Provide a safe, predictable, and supportive environment for all students in all settings.
- Implement methods and practices to ensure that lessons engage students and allow them to build critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
- Work creatively and collaboratively with colleagues to develop and plan curricula.
- Recognize the relationship between social-emotional learning and academic performance and commit to developing and teaching the whole child.
- Provide assessments and feedback that help students build appropriate skills and content mastery.
- Authentically engage in annual self-reflection and goal-setting; demonstrate progress toward goals; remain open and responsive to feedback from students, caregivers, colleagues, and administrators, and embrace a growth mindset.
Qualifications/Skills/Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Spanish or Language Teaching
- 3-5 years teaching experience, preferred
- Desire and ability to work with Middle School students with diverse backgrounds and levels of ability, toward accomplishing their educational goals.
- Excellent communication skills with students, caregivers, school administrators and other staff, including the ability to discuss topics which may be sensitive.
- Facility with using a variety of pedagogical strategies.
- Ability to organize tasks and manage time to meet many and varied deadlines; manage small and large groups of students in a classroom environment;
- Willingness to support the life of the school community beyond classroom teaching/advising.
- Commitment to using conversation norms and constructive engagement at all times with students, caregivers, colleagues and speaking positively about school and community members in all contexts.
- Successful candidates must be able to demonstrate the ways in which inclusive and equitable practices inform their approach to instruction and communication.
Salary and Benefits
- Bryn Mawr School follows a Faculty Salary Scale. Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including a candidate's years of experience, education, skills, and job-related responsibilities.
