Composting & Recycling Progress

Bryn Mawr’s composting efforts are paying off in “black gold” -  words that gardeners use to describe the rich nutrient matter that has resulted from the recycling of food and paper scraps in the school’s cafeteria. Recently, Bryn Mawr AP environmental science students cleared the dead plantings from the school’s vegetable gardens and prepared the garden beds with the “black gold” compost to enrich the soil for next year’s crops. The additional compost was used in other garden areas on the Bryn Mawr campus. more...

Finding Artifacts

Third-grade teachers Katherine Gilbert, Susan Mills, and Christine Rogers began the school year with a unit in archeology so that their students would have a deeper understanding and appreciation for the artifacts that they would encounter in their study of ancient Greece and Egypt. At the conclusion of the archeology unit, the girls participated in an archeological dig on the grounds around the Lower School Science Center building. To prepare for the dig, the girls’ teachers buried “artifacts” that had been carefully selected for what they might reveal about the character of a particular civilization. more...

Maeve, who is studying art history and comparative literature, reveals that in addition to writing for the new journal, her favorite pastimes are drinking Greek iced coffee, knitting, talking too much, and falling asleep in the college’s writing center – where she is apparently spending a good amount of time! You can keep up with Maeve and her journaling at http://hamilton.edu/journals.
