Technology

At Bryn Mawr, we believe that technology helps to foster higher level thinking skills while supporting different learning styles, creativity, and collaborative learning.

Curriculum

The Bryn Mawr School was an early innovator of technology. That tradition continues today on a campus equipped with the latest wireless infrastructure. Some of the highlights of our technology curriculum include:

  • 1:1 laptop and iPad initiative
  • Multiple computer labs
  • Multimedia resources library
  • Formal computer instruction starting in Lower School
  • Computer programming, iPhone app development and graphic design elective courses
  • Laptop cart program

1:1 Laptop and iPad Initiative

Our mission is to prepare our students for the highest level of academic and intellectual development. With this in mind, we have developed a 1:1 laptop and iPad initiative that will introduce students to technology in the Lower School and allow them to transition seamlessly into the Middle and Upper School with a firm understanding of the technology at their disposal.

Lower School iPad and Laptop Program

In the Lower School a 1:1 iPad program has been implemented in Kindergarten, Pre-first and Grade 1. While each iPad is assigned to a particular student, these devices remain at school and are the property of the school. Teachers in Grades 2, 3 and 4 use iPads for instructional purposes, while students explore and use new sets of MacBook Airs.

In Grade 5, a 1:1 MacBook program prepares students for a seamless transition to Middle School. Each MacBook is assigned to a particular student, but remains at school.

Middle and Upper School Laptop Initiative

All students in grades 6-12 are required to bring a laptop to school for daily use. In the Middle School, we require a MacBook Air or Pro with an Apple Care package. Upper School students may choose from a list of approved Mac or PC options. In most cases, it will not be necessary for students to buy a new laptop to meet the requirement. For more information, please email laptops@brynmawrschool.org.

By requiring each student to bring a laptop to school for daily use, we are able to increase equitable access to digital resources. Additionally, it is important that students be able to move seamlessly between school and home, using a device that they know and for which they are responsible. This practice will further their learning both in and out of the classroom.

Professional Development

Professional Development is paramount to the technology program at Bryn Mawr, as it allows our faculty to explore and master new tools and approaches to learning. Our faculty professional development program includes:

  • Regular technology training sessions
  • A dedicated tablet computer for each teacher
  • Ceiling-mounted projectors in all classrooms
  • Access to an ever-growing multimedia resource library
  • A summer initiative called TECHsploration, which introduces participants to different applications and technologies
