The Bryn Mawr School was founded in 1885 in order to provide girls with the same educational opportunities that boys enjoyed, which included an emphasis on physical activity. Now, more than ever, we know that participation in sports helps develop strong, self-confident, well-balanced young women. We continue to celebrate the challenges of competition and appreciate the lessons for life that sports provide.
In the humanistic tradition, The Bryn Mawr School promotes the development of mind, body, and spirit. Driven by the intention to cultivate the whole person, Bryn Mawr supports and promotes each individual. Bryn Mawr is committed to supporting a highly competitive athletic program that strives for excellence in all teams. Our goal is that each girl will compete at her own ability level in a variety of athletic activities.
Participation in athletics is considered an invaluable part of a girl's education at Bryn Mawr. Athletics provides an opportunity for students to develop strong leadership skills, an increased sense of self, a healthy competitive spirit, and a lifelong commitment to fitness. In addition, the athletic experience fosters a sense of camaraderie, teamwork, and school spirit.

Bryn Mawr School varsity teams compete in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland (IAAM) with the exception of crew, ice hockey, and squash. The IAAM is an association of 31 private and parochial schools in Central Maryland which participate in girls' interscholastic sports.
"Let the athletes play.
Let the coaches coach.
Let the officials officiate.
Let the fans cheer encouragement."
The diverse member schools of the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland share a common commitment to athletics as an extension of the educational process. Participation in healthy athletic competition provides our female students opportunities to build character, acquire and improve skills, demonstrate leadership, and have fun. The league, its member schools, and participants embrace fair play, integrity, and respectful behavior as integral components of the spirit of the games.
