Interscholastic teams offer each student an opportunity to participate fully in the athletic life of the school. Softball and varsity soccer play and practice at Bryn Mawr at Mt. Washington; crew, swimming, ice hockey, and squash play and practice off campus in various locations. Most teams practice every day until 5:30 or 6:00 p.m. Varsity volleyball, squash, basketball, ice hockey, swimming, and crew practices are often held either in the early morning or evening. Specific information is available from the Athletic Office. Occasional weekend invitational or holiday practices may be scheduled by coaches who will notify students of these dates well in advance.
Freshman and Sophomore Years: One season of participation on an athletic team, an after-school activity, or managing a school team is required.
Junior and Senior Years: Two seasons of participation on an athletic team, after-school activity, or managing a school team is required.
Bryn Mawr varsity teams are comprised of very skilled and dedicated athletes who wish to compete at a high level of competition. Many of our varsity participants regularly train out-of-season and play both inside and outside of school. Varsity teams emphasize a significant level of fitness, skill, and commitment, along with a focus on individual improvement and teamwork. While winning is not the primary goal, Bryn Mawr aspires to have competitive teams at the varsity level.
All Upper School students are eligible to play at this level. While JV athletics is a primary source for Bryn Mawr's varsity teams, a JV player will not necessarily move to the varsity level of competition. JV squads focus on improving basic skills, while teaching increasingly sophisticated game strategies and techniques. Good sportsmanship, teamwork, and a high fitness level are also emphasized. It is our goal for all players to have playing time; however, in individual games of close competition some girls may not play.
Freshmen and sophomores are eligible to compete at this level in field hockey and lacrosse when we have enough players to field teams. Athletes work on improving fundamental skills, interscholastic play, and game strategies. The fresh/soph level of play is a significant way for Bryn Mawr to build solid JV and varsity teams. All girls can expect playing time at the fresh/soph level. Exceptions to this policy, which may affect playing time include, but are not limited to: injury, illness, missed practices, or poor attitude.
Interscholastic sports in Middle School foster teamwork, responsibility, and school spirit, while introducing the demands of training and competition. We encourage students to participate in as many sports as possible during this time of growth and development.
All Middle School students are required to join one team during the 7th and 8th grades. "Squads" is the term we use to refer to 7th period offerings. The teams meet Tuesdays-Fridays from 2:40 pm - 3:30 pm and will practice and play on campus unless otherwise noted (*). Games take place after school hours and, on average, teams have 12 competitions. It is expected that athletes will attend all practices and games during the season. Exceptions are the badminton and track teams that do not compete after school and Dance Company that holds its performance at the end of the winter season.
Girls on every team will have as much equal playing time as the substitution rules and speed of play allow assuming they attend all practices and maintain a positive attitude. We do make necessary exceptions with the positions of goalie, pitcher, and catcher, as these positions require very specific training demands, experience, and skills.
