Bryn Mawr Music

From her early attempts to match pitch to the day she joins her peers in a heartfelt senior performance of "Joyous the Love," music will be at the heart of your daughter's Bryn Mawr School experience.

Lower School
Bryn Mawr students are listening to and creating their own music often before they are able to read and write. The child-centered philosophy is based primarily upon the Orff-Schulwerk approach; elements of the Kodaly method are woven into the curriculum as students move into the higher grades. String Players whose skills have developed to an appropriate level may join the String Ensemble, while fourth and fifth graders interested in singing may choose to join the Choral Ensemble.

Middle School
Music appreciation, improvisation, and multi-disciplinary projects are the hallmarks of the Middle School music program. Performance opportunities include the Sixth-Grade Chorus, Sumus Deae (the 7th- and 8th-grade chorus), the Middle School String Ensemble, and Ex Solo (the Middle School handbell choir). Major music concerts take place in December and May.

Upper School
Vocal opportunities include two choral ensembles, Camerata and Dayseye, which focus on individual and ensemble vocal development.  Instrumental performing groups include the Upper School String Ensemble, and Ad Solem (the Upper School handbell choir). Dayseye performs often throughout the school year, and a national or international concert tour is scheduled for the group every two years. All music groups perform major concerts in December and May. Additional coursework in orchestra or music theory is also available.

Applied Music Lessons
Private music lessons for various instruments and in voice are offered at school.  See Applied Music for more information.
